Laboratory Work for a New Baby: $ 10
When a new baby is received at the baby center, we have a complete lab workup done on the child. This gives us a baseline assessment for the child, and alerts us to any special medical needs that the baby might need.
This lab work costs an amazing $ 10. Wow! Very inexpensive, but absolutely essential. Your gift for this makes it possible for us to make a careful and realistic health plan for the baby, and to give it that extra edge to living a full and healthy life.
From time to time we need to rush a child to the emergency room. These little ones can get sick very quickly, and many of them come to us in a very fragile state.
Your gift of $ 20 will cover the cost of the emergency room visit, and frankly, we hope that we never need to use these funds!
Sometimes the babies that come to us are very, very sick kids. Even though we have full time nursing staff, and a missionary pediatrician on call, from time to time the babies have to be admitted to the local hospital. The hospital care is quite good, and is available at a fraction of the cost of a US pediatric hospital.
Yet, for these babies, this often means the difference between life and death.
Your gift of $ 120 will cover the average cost of hospital care for one of these special case babies. You may never meet the child whose life you save on this side of glory, but you will have made an amazing difference!
All of our staff members are provided uniforms by the baby center, and you can help them to look sharp! (or "smart" as we call it here in Kenya).
Both our child care givers, our nurses, our cooks, our laundry staff, and our security staff are uniformed. This instills a sense of pride and discipline, and helps with the general family spirit here at the center.
Your contribution of $ 22.00 helps purchase 2 sets of uniforms for one staff member.
A lot of babies means a lot of baby lotion for all of those bottoms! We like our babies to smell sweet, and to have nice soft skin, and that means we use a lot of baby lotion.
Your gift of $ 5.00 will buy enough baby lotion for all of our babies for an entire week. You'll be responsible for all of those sweet smelling, soft, smiling babies!
A lot of babies means a lot of diapers, sheets, and towels that need to be washed. And, that means a lot of laundry soap and bleach to keep our laundry staf busy.
Your gift of $ 200 will keep the laundry fully supplied with the cleaning supplies we need to keep the clothes, sheets, and diapers clean, and to keep our center and babies clean and healthy.
Disposable diapers are really expensive here, so African babies generally use cloth diapers. While it isn't a particularly gamourous gift for the babies, we all know how essential diapers are!
Cloth diapers in Africa are made from very absorbent cloth, similar to terry cloth, and they last forever. Well, almost forever.
We really work hard to provide a healthy diet for our babies. Fortunately, fresh fruit is plentiful and relatively inexpensive here in Kenya. Your gift of $ 50 will pay for fresh fruit for all of our children for an entire month!
Don't you wish you it was that price where you live? It does enable us to provide healthy and nutritious meals for these wonderful children, and your generosity makes it possible.
Our older babies love to drink porridge, and it's a traditional baby food here in Kenya.
And these older babies drink a lot of porridge! Your gift of $ 6.50 will purchase enough porridge mix for one of the older babies for an entire month. The porridge mix here is enriched with vitamins and minerals, and forms part of a nutritious diet for the children.
The porridge used in Kenya is based on millet flour and is really quite tasty! The kids love it.
Our babies are like every other baby! They love milk. For the youngest babies, we need to purchase infant formula in cans.
It's available here in Kenya, but it is expensive. You can help put that satisfied smile on our babies faces by helping purchase formula for these sweet kids.
Each can costs about $ 5.00, and we use 4 or 5 cans a day (depending on how many young infants we have at any particular time).
